Coast Tour Map / Details
We will head due West from Portland to the coastal town of
Tillamook. We will pass through lush coastal mountains, follow the
Salmon River and pass dairies that feed the famous
Tillamook Cheese and Ice Cream industry. During the drive, your
photo coach will be available to answer questions and prepare you
for an unbelievable day of shooting.
We will follow the road out of Tillamook along Tillamook Bay
where abundant birds and bay scenery greet us. Our first breath
taking high altitude vista of the Pacific is shortly before Cape
Meares. Cape Meares is famous for it's classic light house and
high cliffs. We head South then along the coastline with more
amazing views and eventually drop down to beach level at Cape
Lookout. We will keep going South to the dramatic Cape
Kiwanda
and lunch at Pacific City.
There will be plenty of
opportunities for beach walking, tide pooling, and wave watching
along this route.
From Pacific City we swing inland to the Sand Lake recreational area. This is a beautiful sand dune area. Parts of it are designated for recreational use by sand vehicles which can be fun to watch and photograph.
Heading back to Portland, we will pass again through the lush Coastal mountains and have lots of time to discuss the days scenes, the technical challenges and how they were overcome and other learning opportunities that were shared. You are encouraged to bring a laptop or use ours for viewing and sharing the days photos with other guests as well as your photography coach.
It does frequently rain at the coast throughout most of the year
except mid-summer.
Most of the time the rain is quite mild and
intermittent. Sometimes real squalls blow in. It's always a good
idea to bring along a coat, preferably a rainproof one. In any
case, as Oregonians we learn to appreciate and treasure whatever
weather we are dealt and take some great shots regardless.
Personally, some of my favorite photos of the coast are the intense
waves and dramatic skies created by weather. Any experienced Oregon
photographer will tell you, "Sunny days are boring!"
